Wayne Rooney eyes the performance of his life against Bayern

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes that his side have the quality in attack to spring a surprise and knock Bayern Munich out of the Champions League next week, but only if they produce the best European performance of his time at the club.

Rooney won the competition with United in 2008 on a famous night in Moscow, although he thinks successfully edging the defending champions Bayern at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday would top that feat given the way the Red Devils' chances were largely dismissed when the quarter-final draw was confirmed.


United kept critics quiet with a spirited, professional performance against Bayern at Old Trafford on Tuesday, taking the lead through Nemanja Vidic after the interval and holding the lead for nine minutes before Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised.

David Moyes' side are still very much in the tie ahead of a decisive return leg in Munich but must score to stay in the competition, with Rooney confident that United can exploit Bayern's defensive deficiencies to earn a place in the final four of Europe's elite club competition.

The 28-year-old told The Mirror: “I think it would be our biggest performance in Europe in my memory if we went there and got a result. They are favourites for the tournament, and it will be a tough ask.

"We needed to give ourselves a chance, and still be in the tie - and we’ve done that. “We have to go there and score.

"We’re in the game. It’s 50-50, and you can see we will get chances against them. They play a high line and with a little more composure, we can exploit that. We’re still in the tie and looking forward to it.”

Bayern are still strong favourites to continue their march towards a second successive treble, but will be without suspended duo Javi Martinez and Schweinsteiger for the return against United.
