The Timberwolves squandered a red-hot start Sunday at Target Center. Up by as many as 22 points in the first half and by 10 entering the fourth quarter, the Wolves wound up losing to Phoenix 127-120 in a Sunday matinee.
Up 118-115 on two Ricky Rubio free throws with 1:56 left in the game, the Wolves allowed the Suns to score the next seven points to take a 122-118 lead on Gerald Green’s two free throws with 32.7 seconds left. The Wolves (34-34) squandered a 36-point, 14-rebound, nine-assist game by Kevin Love, 25 points by Kevin Martin and 19 from Rubio.
The Suns just never gave up. Markieff Morris scored 25 points off the bench for Phoenix (41-29). Eric Bledsoe had 21, P.J. Tucker had 19 and Goran Dragic had 18. The Suns shot 57.5 percent overall, hit on 12 of 27 three-pointers, scored 50 points in the paint and 22 points on the fast break.
The Wolves had their fourth 40-point quarter of the season while opening up a 41-27 lead after one quarter. They had a season-high 73 points at halftime and were past 100 before the fourth quarter began.
And none of that mattered as the Wolves fell back to .500, their playoff hopes getting dimmer.
Within 10 entering the fourth quarter, the Suns started it on a 14-3 run to take a 107-106 lead on Goran Dragic’s three-pointer with 7:14 left in the game.
From there it was back and forth.
Two free throws from Green gave the Suns a 113-110 lead, but Dante Cunningham’s three-point play with 2:59 left tied the score. Bledsoe hit two free throws with 2:39 left, but Love followed with a three-point play with 2:24 left to give the Wolves a 116-115 lead.
At the other end Love got control of Green’s missed shot and got the ball to Rubio, who made both free throws with 1:56 left for a 118-115 lead.
