Three-time former champion Novak Djokovic overcame Jeremy Chardy on Friday 6-4, 6-3 at the Sony Open Tennis as he started his quest to capture a second Indian Wells-Miami title double.
Last week’s BNP Paribas Open winner will next challenge No. 30 seed Florian Mayer, who defeated Ivan Dodig 6-3, 6-2 in 66 minutes.
Djokovic won both ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles at Indian Wells and Miami in 2011. Seven players have achieved back-to-back success at the tournaments, including Jim Courier (1991), Michael Chang (1992), Pete Sampras (1994), Marcelo Rios (1998), Andre Agassi (2001), Djokovic (2011) and Roger Federer (2005-06) – who is the only player to have done it twice.
Second seed Djokovic served for the set at 5-3, but was broken by Chardy. He responded immediately, with a break to love, to clinch the 41-minute opener having committed 13 unforced errors. Chardy required treatment for a right ankle injury after Djokovic broke for a 5-3 lead in the second set. The encounter lasted 85 minutes.
The 26-year-old Djokovic has a 27-5 record at Crandon Park, venue of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 hard-court tournament. He took home the silverware in 2007 (d. Canas), 2011 (d. Nadal) and 2012 (d. Murray). This week, he is bidding to capture the 43rd trophy of his career.
