Athletico Target Reunion With Former Player and Chelsea Flop

Atletico Madrid are targeting Fernando Torres to be their lead striker next season, as speculation over Diego Costa’s future continues, according to the Sun.

Costa is believed to be a summer transfer target for a number of clubs around Europe, with Chelsea believed to be leading the chase for the in-form forward, with Jose Mourinho reportedly unhappy with his current options.

Torres is one of those options that have displeased the Portuguese tactician and he could be the man sold to bring in extra funds, with Chelsea now having to abide by UEFA Financial Fair Play rulings.

Torres has endured a torrid three years at Stamford Bridge since joining from Liverpool in 2011 and support even from the top has worn out for the £50 million man.

Torres graduated from the Atletico academy prior to his move to Anfield and it is believed that they could look to bring their prodigal son back to Vicente Calderon should Costa decide to move on at the end of the season.

The move would give ‘El Nino’ the chance to resume his link up with David Villa after the pair enjoyed a successful stint up front together for the Spanish national team and give the much-maligned Torres a chance to rebuild his reputation in familiar surroundings, having become a figure of fun in England.
